Creek, Cherokee, Woodland, and other Native American tribes lived in northern Georgia long before non-native settlers started arriving in the 17th
centuries. Douglasville was originally known as Skint Chestnut, a reference to the large tree that was skinned of its bark. Douglas County was created in 1870, and Skint Chestnut was named the county seat. The Town of Douglasville was established in 1875, and the city grew considerably after it gained a railroad connection.
Today, Douglasville is home to more than 31,000 people. Though Douglasville is considered part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, it has a very small-town feel. The downtown area is popular among history buffs, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hunter Park, which is Douglasville's largest park, is a popular place for festivals and general recreation.
