Babies are a blessing, and many non-eventful pregnancies and births occur on a daily basis. Unfortunately, some babies suffer injuries during birth, including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, paralysis, and fractures.
Some common birth injuries are caused by: lack of oxygen, lack of blood flow, shoulder dystocia, and trauma caused by forceps or suction injuries. While not all birth injuries are avoidable, expectant mothers can reduce the risk of injury during pregnancy by regular pre-birth doctor visits, specialized treatment when needed, and by regular monitoring of fetal heart rate, contraction pattern, and continual assessment of mother and baby. Always seek a qualified and licensed medical doctor early in the pregnancy, if not before, to ensure a plan of action is in place to reduce the odds of injury during birth.
